Family support
Supporting a child also means supporting the family.
Caregiver burnout
Constant alertness, appointments, and broken sleep add up. Feeling depleted is not a sign you’re doing it wrong. It’s a sign you’ve been carrying a lot. Small breaks count.
Siblings and family dynamics
- Give siblings some one-on-one time, even ten minutes.
- Explain things honestly, in words that fit their age.
- Let them have mixed feelings. Those feelings are allowed.
Finding community
Other parents who understand can make a big difference, and so can listening to autistic adults describe their own childhoods. Look for local parent groups, library programs, or online communities that share an acceptance-first approach.
Permission to rest
Rest is part of caring for your child, not time taken away from them. A calmer parent helps create a calmer home.
ONE SMALL THING TO TRY
Name one thing you can take off your list this week.
